Sometimes inspiration is in your very own cupboard...
Between my love of food and worship of fabric, how could it be humanly possible that I didn't see the forest for the trees?
The truth is, I was most surprised myself with the sitting-right-in-front-of-me-no-brainer that became the basis for my latest fabric line. Because staring at me every day from my kitchen cabinets are stacks of my beloved hand-painted pottery collection from Poland. The busy, colorful, and lively stoneware that I've been picking up piece by delicious piece for years, became the inspiration for krakow, my newest line for Mark Lipinski's Home for Northcott.
Taking a cue from ancient and traditional patterns of Polish artisans and culture,
I updated the time-honored look with a color palette of scrumptious blues and greens, and added a line of the more customary and traditional Polish color combinations of red, black and white.
Named for the "cultural capitol" of Poland, krakow's florals, dots, and striped designs all grew out of the different elements I found glazed into the vintage stoneware. These designs have been both popular and collectible around the world for centuries, and for a good reason. Now, you have the chance to color your quilting world with these timeless and classic fabric designs washed with contemporary color and style.
Mark's Polish stoneware collection
Grant it, I have a Polish surname, but no one in my family ever collected this stuff. As a matter of fact, it wasn't until I discovered it, only about 7 or 8 years ago, that I even knew Polish stoneware existed at all. While most high end culinary shops carry a piece or two, I have found most of my collection through private estate sales, and, in rare cases, on online auction web sites. But you can bet that I always have my eyes peeled for pieces at yard sales and white elephant tables.
What I like most about this collectable is that because they are hand-painted and other hand-crafted, no two pieces are ever alike, especially in the older pieces. And, they mix-and-match perfectly.
However, like everything else, along with its popularity comes mass production, and the hand thrown pattery is becoming increasingly difficult to find. More and more, the modern factory pieces are absolutely uniform, and much less interesting. The painting and glazes, however, remain true to tradition.
As a quilter, I was immediately drawn to the intricate patterns, the rich, deep
color combos, and the traditional look of the Polish folk art stoneware.
I remember wishing that I could find fabric that I like as much. Well, be careful what you wish for...
